Reg Whatley (SAHS '67) & the 2015 World Military Games

For many years I competed in Triathlons throughout the world and in the past 17 years, tried to give back to the sport and lifestyle by officiating both USA Triathlon and International Triathlon races.

I have been very fortunate to be recognized for my contributions by being assigned some very high profile events and just recently (July 27th 2011) returned from Rio, site of the World Military Games, where the Triathlon competition was held July 24th on CopaCabana Beach.

CISM World Military Games is held every 4 years and the year prior to the Olympics, smaller only to the Olympics as all participants should be Military (that doesn't always happen). I was very honored to march in both the Opening and Closing ceremonies and had the distinct pleasure to befriend many Service persons from our Armed Forces as well as nations from all over to include Iran, Syria and DPRK. It was a site to view, nations whose politicians draw lines; military services ignoring those lines and developing Friendship Through Sport.

The next games will be held in PRK in 2015 and if I am once again honored to participate, I will gladly attend and if possible, visit some of the old haunts.
