Young Do, you kayseki, daldari, perra! We made $1.20 an hour. Picking up trash. We got to be outside all day. I got fired for telling some random 1st Sgt at some enlisted quarters to kiss my ass. Not sure if you were there for that. He wouldn't let us use the restroom and then proceeded to point out cigarette butts that we missed and needed to pick up. It was back to scrounging around for aluminum cans and selling to Mr. Kim outside gate 19. As for losing, I didn't get expelled and Dr. Carmone used to let me smoke in the teachers lounge! He was concerned if I went outside to smoke I wouldn't return.

I also used to use the "hospital visit" to skip school except I would actually go to the hospital, sneak out the rear,  and return at the end of the day and get the checkin desk to sign it. Gate 19 was right  there. Very convenient.

Life has been very good to me, post Korea. Living and loving life. I'm in Oregon, BTW.

What's up, everybody? VP Dr. Carmone, was something. He suspended me, once. I Remember Debbie and Kathy Rider. We used to party hard! Monte Cristo at Embassy Club was the best. We were first graduating Class.

I remember getting many job offers after college although I was less than a mediocre student from a mediocre public university. I feel for the new generation of kids, including my own, vying for a spot at top schools which are harder and harder to get into each year and to boot having to spend exorbitant amount on tuition not knowing whether there will be a place for them in the workforce.

Let them learn a trade. "Top Colleges" are a thing of the past unless you want to indoctrinate your kids to hate America.

Hi all. I graduated SAHS in 1961, the second graduating class. I've enjoyed reading the recent posts from all you later grads. Seems like I'm not the only one who believes our time in Seoul was a priceless life lesson. I have only good memories and wouldn't trade them for anything. I spent my sophomore year at Seoul Foreign School. Does it still exist? Moved to SAHS for junior year when the school opened. So sad it's gone now. Attending schools all over Europe absorbing culture and making friends with international students in England, Germany, Greece, Japan, and finally Korea gave me knowledge that no university could provide. It shaped my thinking and view of the world for a lifetime. I live in Georgia USA now and have no friends here who had the Brat experience and it amazes me sometimes how narrow their views are. I do keep in touch with some of my classmates from Seoul. They are like touchstones for me. So keep posting. I'll keep reading.

Hi, Sam and all of you reading this..

Wonderful to be in touch this way! i was at SAHS for my jr and sr years and spent mine stateside, but those two years in Kores put a stamp on my life that I'll always feel. We've all changed in many ways but the memories remain solidly in our hearts!

I don't know if Seoul Foreign is still around. The year I started was one where several classmates had transferred over and ( gasp) could actually dance at the Teen Club, a restored/reformed quonset hut on South Post.

Best to everyone,

Lyn Shaw

Hey Lyn and Sam,

The next Decade of the ‘60s reunion will be October 14 – 18 in San Francisco, CA. To be on the list to receive details and updates, email seoulahs6@gmail.com with your name as it appears in your yearbook and your class year.

SAHS Brats was founded August 2, 1986 at the Saturday night Dinner Dance. The commitment was to continue reunions. That was 35 years ago and this will be the 12th reunion. We have been to Colorado, Cancún, Mexico, Crystal City, VA, Lake Tahoe, NV, Greensboro, NC, Waikoloa, Hawaii, Las Vegas, NV, Atlanta, GA, and several others.

There are over 40 people who are already on the list including some from all '60s classes (except for 1959 & 1960). It will be fun to play with people our age!!

Like Sam & Lynn, I too read all of your messages. My 3.5 years '59-'63 will always be remembered as some the most special of my 'long' lifetime. Jim & I recently celebrated our 58th Anniversary. Currently I am a full-time caregiver for Jim at home. He is a 100% service-connected disabled Vietnam Veteran - Army. Here's wishing you all much happiness and good health. Carol, sister to Kerry & Larry. FYI befor retiring in '09, a colleague had accepted a teaching position at Seoul Foreign School.

Sounds like the class of '84 was interesting.

Anyone from the class of '71 on this forum?

John Bennett (1971)

Hi Sue - I also would have been class of '71 although I returned to Fairbanks, Alaska in the middle of my Junior year where I continue to reside.  I've been thinking a lot about my time in Korea lateley as I have been cleaning out my house and shipping most of my Korean memorabilia to daughter as she has become the family genealogist.  I was always amazed that while today's parents would think twice about letting their kid cross the street alone, we had the freedom to randomly wander a foreign country in search of obscure temples as the mood hit us.  A real mind opening experience.  Glad to see there is another person from '71 out there.  JohnB (aka "Fairbanks")

Hey Old-timers! Nice to hear from more 1960s folks. Keep hanging in there! Lyn, miss hearing from you at Christmas.

Susan Lynn Stranathan (Rosen) (1971)

Hi, John!

It's good to see someone else from that time on this forum. I attended SAHS for 10th through 12th grades and graduated from there in '71. My dad had orders, so we shipped out the day after graduation. I never even got my yearbook, so it's great to see that it's available online.

I put my full legal name on my profile, but I go by Lynn. Though, there was a time in HS that I tried out "Susan" for a bit. Didn't last long because the reason my folks didn't call me that is that my mom goes by "Sue." The first time someone called our quarters for me. asked for "Sue" and my mom answered with her sweetest "I'll show you" voice, "Speaking..." Well, I stopped trying to use my first name at once!

I realized just last week that this month--May 2021 is 50 years!! Do you know if there have ever been any reunions with our bunch?

Be well.

My time at SAHS was formative, as it was for most of us, shaping an attitude towards the world that I've rarely found anywhere else - which is why I find this forum so important in my life. We share something unique and transformative.
My wife, Rosemary, and I just did the other "Florida thing" and moved north to be close to our daughter. Fortunately, we haven't had to move very far - just to the outskirts of Gainesville, Florida - so it's not too much of a shock!
Thanks for all the shared memories!

Ya'll,as they would say in Georgia, from the '60s and '70s are so laid back and chill. On the other hand those of us from the '80s still do not have a clue what the hell is going on. As for those of you from '90s and beyond, you guys are so damn politically charged and correct that it is almost frightening. Chill guys and enjoy life.

Cristina, I agree with you totally. Learning a trade is way to go. I spent last 35 years honing my skills as an accountant only to be replaced by Turbo Tax and Quickbooks.

I recall walking into our living room as my dad's eyes and attention were pivoted on our TV set. It was a black anchor on AFKN news saying that they were discovering Crown Hotel Casino slot machine coins(instead of quarters) in all arcade machines on both South and Main post. I saw both disdain and disgust on my dad's face as he absorbed what he was hearing. Of course my reaction was " oh ____!" . Only if my dad knew that I was the one who handed out several hundred of those coins to my classmates, which were given to me by an employee at Crown Hotel Casino.

I believe I set a record at SAHS for achieving 0.0 GPA for 2 consecutive semesters(quarters?).
