Cheryl was my high school sweetheart.  We dated our junior and senior year.  She was a cheerleader and head of the yearbook project.  Magically I got a full page picture playing basketball.   Thanks Cheryl.  After high school we met in Marine County for a short road trip before she flew on to FL for college.  I was sad she was so far away.  I went to jr. college in southern CA and then on to Berkeley for my undergraduate degree.  We never got together in the college years.  If we had we probably would have been married.  I was definitely in love.

Twenty five years went by, I was divorced and single when I got a call from her.  I was in CA and she now resided in NJ, teaching.  Coincidentally, one of the 4 manufacturing plants I was overseeing was in NJ.  This gave me an opportunity to see Cheryl again.  We dated for a few months, but our time had passed or so I thought.  By this time Cheryl was in love with me, probably for the first time.  Eventually, I remarried a second time to a lady from Chicago and that marriage lasted 10 years.

Cheryl and I reconnected and shared emails periodically.  We also talked by phone a number of times.   She was a happy, intelligent, caring, delightful lady.  Cheryl will always be a special part of my cherished memories and will live on in my heart.

I never knew that she was ill or was fighting any kind of illness.  In retrospect, I wish that I had been more in touch during her final years.  She deserved that.  Cheryl, if you are listening, I will always have some love in my heart for you.

Hi Doug,
I read your sweet memoir of Cheryl Smith. I remember her fondly too. I recall the meeting in Marin Co after graduation when I reconnected with Deacon and we 4 spent a day at an amusement park. Long years ago! I'm happy now in Georgia where we have lived since 1981. Nice to reminisce with you. Best regards, Sam
