I went to Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, then worked teaching in Malawi, East Africa. I went to UC San Diego School of Medicine, did residency and fellowships in pediatrics. I also studied Zen at the Zen Center of Los Angeles, was ordained as a Zen priest, and now live at Great Vow Zen Monastery in Oregon. I was married at age 20 to Michael Soule, a biologist, for 17 years. We are still good friends. Married a second time to Laren Bays, a naturopathic physician and Zen priest, for 25 years.

School Story:

Chemistry class, astonished to see Tom Drummond and Bill Williams dumping the remains of their experiments in a drawer in the big desks. Loved the Teen Club and the school dances. Remember when Pearl Buck visited and spoke to us?
