School Story:
My math teacher (probably somewhere circa 1963-65) was Mrs Sturchio. For some reason I remember her being a big Joan Baez fan. During class one day she announced that if anyone could sing or play the guitar like Joan, they were welcome to bring their guitar to math class and put on a show. I had no idea who Joan Baez was at that point, but a few years later, I, too became a Baez fan (and have since bought one her signature guitars). Another memory is of living in Itaewon and of a classmate, Clifton Chu, who had a Korean mother. They lived in a Korean style house which was unusual for Itaewon because most of it was Western. Clifton had me over for dinner one time and his mother introduced me to bulgogi and I have been enjoying that dish ever since. I used that dish a lot in my younger days as a caterer. I heard that the original Itaewon where I lived has been torn down completely rebuilt. One memory is of living in house 138 in Itaewon. I was surfing the net recently and stumbled on Bill Smothers (SAHS alum) photo gallery and a picture of him in front of house 138 (when he had apparently also lived just before we moved in). This was quite a surprise/coincidence and although we never knew each other, but I emailed him and reminisced about our years living in Itaewon. I used to hang out in the telephone operator shack (back in those days to make a phone call you picked up your phone and waited for the Itaewon operator to come on the line and she would complete the call). Well this was seriously an antique Lily Tomlin type set up. It looked just like the switchboard prop that Lily Tomlin used to perform her Ernestine character!
