I am sorry to hear about Julius  ...  I enjoyed playing in the band with him for several years while we were @ SAHS  ..  He was a good friend and a great front man for Julius & the Romans .......

I met Julius shortly after I arrived in Korea in 1966.  I remember playing "House of the Rising Sun" with him.

I have a correction for the wikipedia summary in the forum.  The new school mentioned in 1967 was actually in Pusan, not Taegu.  I was in the first graduating class, all 9 of us.  My family lived in Chinhae, so my first two years in Korea I traveled every Sunday in a van for two hours to Pusan, then we joined the Pusan students for a 10 hour train ride to Seoul.  We were joined by other students in Taegu and other stops. Every Friday we made the trip back home again.  We spent a lot of time in the "UN" train car.  When the new school opened in Pusan, all I had was the two hour van ride from Chinhae.  Much shorter.

I heard from his ex-wife Sue (class of 1962) that Ken Kraft ('61) passed away recently. Here is the only pic I have of Ken, along with my late friend Wayne Sigleo ("62),who passed away from cancer in 1986 or 87. We were at the forbidden old imperial Japanese "capital bldg " (which I believe is now torn down? Yes, I looked it up. The hated bldg was demolished in 1995).

I am sad our old school is no longer and RIP to Wayne, Ken, Claudia Ch. and Sharon DaS.. (classes of 61 & 62).

Judi A., sorry about prom night.

Janet P, you seem lost to the school. Sorry about my behavior generally.

Mr Hervey, you were a very good teacher and you deserved better than the likes of me in class! I wrote an essay about you.

I wonder how long this website will endure?

Pete-- So sorry to hear about Julius.   I was a good friend of his little brother, Alex, and your sister, Norma.

The Pestana family was also good friends w/ my family when we lived in the P.I. after Korea.

Please extend my sympathies to his family.

Susan Tepping, Class of 1962, died on September 6th, 2016, in Atlanta, Georgia, of thyroid cancer. She was a published music scholar, a respected composer and performer, and a much-loved music teacher.  I had liost touch with her after SAHS, but we rconnected about a year before she died. There are a number of very moving tributes to her on her Facebook page.

Arthur, Thank you for posting the information regarding the passing of Susan Tepping, SAHS 1962. May she rest in peace. I consulted my SAHS yearbooks and found her pictured in both her Junior year (1961) and Senior year (1962), and was pleased that I did recognize her. Your description regarding her music accompishments sounded quite interesting. Would you be able to pinpoint an obituary notice that might detail such, either newspaper or funeral home.  Thanks.  Best regards (sorry to have missed your birthday). Jim Schindler, SAHS 1960-62 ("Class of 1964").

Thanks, Jim. Unfortunately, all I have about Susan Tepping is taken from our correspondence and gleaned from her Facebook page. I am sure there will have been fulsome tributes, especially at her memorial concert. If I find anything more, I'll be glad to post it.

We were in country twice. My sixth grade teacher at SAMS 1974/75 school year was Janice Crabtree. I’ve been trying to locate her for years now with no avail. Does anybody remember her and have any idea on her current status? Thanks Roger

Jim Mendelson (1967)

Hello SAHS ’67 Classmates,

Jim Mendelson here.  I hope this email finds everyone and their families well and safe while isolating from COVID-19.

I propose we conduct a virtual class reunion/meeting on Sunday July 12th at 4PM EDT (1 PM PDT on the left coast) to allow everyone to visit and catch up; some for the first time in over half a century!   I trust most are familiar with Zoom, which only requires a smart phone, I-Pad, laptop or desk computer with an internet connection.  It will allow all to see (unless you don’t want to be seen) and speak with each other.  Using the “gallery" view up to 49 participants per screen page can be viewed at once.  To allow everyone to speak and update classmates on their lives. ,

To do this, I would ask everyone interested in participating to email me at:  jsmclmax@gmail.com.  That will allow me to compile a list of email addresses to send the link for joining the meeting.   Lastly, if you are not familiar with Zoom, let me know and I will forward you info on it.

For anyone not familiar with Zoom, attached is a photo of what a meeting looks like in the gallery view.

This came from Bob Anderson. Thank you Bob. Class of 67 slab was demolished in the 80's when a new restaurant was constructed. This slab brought back good memories.

Laura Schultz (Nix) (1964)

I seldom open this web site but thought I should see who is writing what about memories of their Korean experience.  I look back on my two years (1960 - 1962) as truly a wonderful all American high school similar to those activities in the movie, American Graffiti...........sock hops where we actually decorated our bobby socks so we could dance on the gym floor without damaging the wood.  Loved the fact that there was an ice skating rink built with 2 x 4's and flooded nightly in a parking lot in those cold winters to entertain the teens and keep us out of mischief.  Or how about we girls went to the PX and bought party dresses for a dance and three of us showed up wearing the same semi formal dress.  Only my mother had removed the bow to make it a bit different.  Lastly I loved those basketball games where I was one of the cheerleaders.

I also remember the Rhee revolution and the second anti-American one later.  I remember my dad coming into my bedroom and throwing me to the floor in the middle of the night as tracer bullets were flying through the fence.  Scarey times!   Always packed and ready to evacuate to Inchon.

My husband of 52 years and I live in Fairfax Virginia as we have since 1983 when he was transferred to the Pentagon.  Alexandria is home for him so we stayed here after retirement.  Our sons are grown and gone.  One lives in Kentucky with his wife and four children and my second son lives in Florida and he and his wife are expecting their first child.  Our days are spent playing tennis and golf at Army Navy Country Club..........a life saver during this pandemic.  All is well.

Laura, so great to read a posting from a contemporary. We arrived January 1960 from St. Louis, departed June 1962 back to St. Louis, housed on the civilian side of South Post. Thank you for sharing your experience with the 2nd revolution, as we only heard indirect stories. Ice rink? Where was that?

Reading the more recent posts from later classes, things certainly changed after our time. Never made it to a class or all classes reunion, so far. Moved many times since high school, and - now back to St. Louis for the fifth time in my life.

Warmest regards for a Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy New Year. Stay safe, stay well, test negative.

Jim Schindler

I cherish my years in Seoul. The current violence against Asian Americans in the US is sickening.  I hope my SAHS classmates have the guts to stand up against violence to our brothers and sisters.
